“I
started playing football at competitive level at age 8, and
was playing for West Midlands County by the age of 14. After
attending trials at various clubs I decided to sign for Birmingham
City. Mark Fogarty by this time got in touch with me and
invited me to train at the soccer school. It came as a fantastic
extra for me and helped me with aspects of the game that
I had never been able to practice on a regular basis. It
gave me a lot more knowledge and understanding of the game
and also introduced me to techniques and practices I could
do on my own.
I received a lot of one on one coaching which we were encouraged
to put into games and try to use them. The sessions were
always varied, and fun was always mixed in with the practices,
plus most weeks there would be an ex or current professional
footballer at the sessions, which also added to the variation
of the training, as they brought along their own individual
styles of training. A lot of the sessions I was doing back
then I still do today, for example quick feet, plyometrics
and keep ball.
I stayed with Mark for well over 2 years until I signed scholarship
forms with Birmingham City, which then lead to me signing
professionally a year later”
Darren scored the winning penalty for Birmingham City versus
Norwich that put Blues into the premiership for the first
time ever!
